Existing reversible heat pumps are poorly suited to houses in a temperate climate with fluctuating temperatures, the author suggests. He describes tests, still continuing at the UK Electricity Council Research Centre, on a simpler experimental air-to-air unit which has performed promisingly so far. He wonders, however, whether the true economic competitor of the simple heat pump is really better thermal insulation.
