Motivating the British construction industry
This paper proposes three guidelines for attaining and maintaining the commitment of project and design personnel, contractors and workforce to large capital project objectives. These guidelines have evolved from the authors' experience in several major capital projects in the North East of England as well as a recent visit to the USA. The paper begins with a review of the authors' experience in the UK construction industry from 1960 to 1980, moves on to describe the impact of a visit to the USA and finishes with a discussion of the specific actions that are being taken to implement the proposed guidelines.
