Sediment Yield from Agricultural Watersheds: An Old Problem Readdressed
Sediment yield from agricultural watersheds is calculated, measured, and an uncertainty analysis is performed. Six Hungarian agricultural watersheds and reservoirs have been selected as study areas. Among various calculation methods, the combined use of the modified Universal Soil Loss Equation and the US Soil Conservation Service runoff model appears to yield the most accurate estimates of annual sediment yield. Parameter uncertainty may result in a coefficient of variation of the calculated yield between 0.14 and 0.21. The deposited sediment was surveyed with a relatively small error: the coefficient of variation was between 0.02 and 0.06. It is found that in five cases the relative error of multiannual sediment yield estimation is not greater than 30% at the 0.70 probability level.
