Generic Buildings and Cultural Landscapes as Sources of Urban History
Buildings and landscapes are active participants in social and cultural processes, making the study of changing urban forms (“urban morphogenesis”) an important theme in urban history. Ordinary landscapes are especially valuable texts of social and cultural history. Building types with unknown cultural histories are important as they shed light on the neglected aspects of urban history and its pluralistic nature. This essay explains how a “historian of cultural landscapes” approaches the study of common environments in his own research (by studying the cultural history of a prevalent building type—the residential hotel) and in his teaching. In both, the evolution of cultural landscapes is placed within the broader framework of urban history.
