The transport importance of the Arabian (Persian) Gulf
The enormous reserves of petroleum in the Gulf region have contributed to the unprecedented economic and demographic development of the Gulf countries. Eight countries provide approximately 20% of the world oil production. Some 85% of oil extracted here is exported. Gulf countries supply about 40% of the world's crude oil exports and about 15% of oil product exports. Petroleum is mainly loaded on to tankers in the Gulf, although some is pumped through pipelines to ports on the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Most of the oil is carried out from the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz. The bulk of the supply is directed towards Western Europe and Japan. The economic existence of many states depends upon this petroleum supply from the Gulf. This paper describes the development of the region and the importance of transport, particularly sea transport, to the region (and to the rest of the world).
