Growth without limits: Some case studies of 20th-century urbanization
Urban growth, which now includes 80% of the population in the West, has been greatest in the 20th century. After a historical survey, case studies of some German and English towns of different sizes are examined, followed by a comparison between London and Moscow. The method used is to measure this growth on topographical maps and land use statistics and to relate it to per person population figures. This serves as a basis of comparison for the development of these towns and cities over the years. The results show a striking similarity; after the most dramatic increases, the rate of growth is now slackening. If this trend holds, planning is faced with a new situation.
