Reviewing work carried out in the USA, the author, from the US National Building of Standards, summarises a wide range of research that has mostly been reported at recent conferences and which is essentially concerned with indoor air quality. Despite the current burgeoning of the subject, he suggests, the results of different studies are frequently at variance with each other; advances in measurement techniques should help to enhance knowledge in an area where much of the evidence is at present inconclusive.
