A strategy for urban and regional research

Research priorities in this field have in the past evolved in an unsystematic way. This paper describes an attempt to produce a strategy for research and argues that there are two stages in such a process. Firstly, there is a need to establish systematic criteria for the formulation of projects. The criteria suggested in this paper also form a framework for relating projects to each other. They thus feed directly into the second stage of the process, that of identifying concrete priorities for research. The overall purpose of the strategic framework is to establish the structural context of each project. Research priorities, which unlike the framework may change over time, reflect the increasing role of the state and the need to analyse the operation of economic processes.
