Restoring Old Water Mains
Two institutes in the German Democratic Republic have developed a method for restoring old iron and steel water supply mains in situ. A new internal lining is formed by inserting a sleeve inside the cleaned old pipe, inflating it by compressed air and injecting a superplasticised but resin-free cement mortar to fill the space between sleeve and pipe. Messrs Drewnick and Teuber work at the GDR Bauakademie, Institute of Civil Engineering and Earthworks, Leipzig, and Messrs Findeisen and Lamm at the GDR Water Engineering Research Centre.
