Simulation of Sacramento River Flows with Tidal Effects
A mathematical model of the lower Sacramento River was developed which included tidal effects. The mathematical description of the flow behavior is provided by an implicit numerical solution of St-Venant equations. Tidal variations in the river are expressed as general wave functions with basic frequencies equal to those of the semidiurnal and diurnal tides. The model was verified using historical flows. The model results indicate that uncertainties in the determination of the geometric description of individual river sections and resistance coefficients are usually of more importance that the influence of approximations used in the formulation of the equations for finite-difference solutions.
