Gauging productivity in construction
The history of productivity studies is reviewed here, with particular reference to attempts to improve on the conventional charting of single-factor productivity, usually the labour element. Results of recent studies, mostly in Scandinavia and North America, are summarised and the paper concludes with an account of a study starting in Finland which aims to evolve a set of productivity indicators for practical application by building firms which could possibly be incorporated in data files. The author is Professor at the Laboratory of Building Economics of the Technical Research Centre for Finland.
