There have been academies and societies in Italy with the strangest names, such as the ‘Rossi’ and the ‘Intronati’ in Siena. In Rome, however, there is the ‘Garden of the Simples’ — in this case, the name “simples” does not refer to the people who frequent the garden, but rather to the plants in it, because they are easy or simple to find. If one needs a ‘functional’ plant (a term used to indicate plants that might have a function, or might produce a certain effect, as in keeping one awake, or making one fall asleep, or eliminating pain), one sim.ply has to go into a garden or the woods and find it; and so, for this reason, they are called ‘simple’. On the other hand, difficult plants to find because they are rare or come from afar are special (‘speziali’) spices or herbs.
