Charting prices in a socialist economy
A centrally planned economy based on socialist principles still has to cope with increasing building costs and prices. Here an economist at EGSZI, the Hungarian Institute for Building Economics and Organisation, explains the data collection system which produces building price indices based on unit labour costs, a process which has marked similarities with price-monitoring systems elsewhere. This article is an abridged version of a detailed contribution to the work of CIB working group W55 on building economics.
