Horizontal homogeneity in laboratory-compacted asphalt specimens
Based on Marshall- and gyratory-compacted specimens and digital image processing, the horizontal homogeneity with depth of laboratory-compacted asphalt specimens was investigated. The effect of horizontal homogeneity on an indirect tensile (IDT) test was numerically simulated by the finite element method and was verified by IDT testing. Results showed the inhomogeneity in the horizontal direction of laboratory-compacted asphalt specimens. The horizontal homogeneity varied with depth of the laboratory-compacted asphalt specimens. Marshall specimens were better than the gyratory-compacted specimens in terms of the homogeneity of the horizontal cross sections at the top and bottom. Additionally, with an increase in the nominal maximum aggregate size, the horizontal homogeneity in the laboratory-compacted asphalt specimens deteriorated. The horizontal homogeneity also dominated variations in the maximum stresses (in-plane principal stresses and Von Mises stresses) in the IDT test.
