Integrating waste biomass into thermal energy production systems: a strategic methodological framework
Integrating biomass within existing energy production systems has emerged as an effective intervention in addressing the ever-increasing global energy needs. In this paper, the integration of waste biomass into a portfolio of supply chains for thermal energy production is addressed. A strategic optimisation framework is developed for determining the optimal mixture of energy sources for a specific geographical region. The proposed framework could be employed by a policy-maker to conduct various ‘what-if’ analyses, in order to develop interventionary policies for effectively promoting the integration of waste biomass into an existing portfolio of energy systems. Finally, a real-world case study is presented while relevant managerial insights are discussed.
