Conservation of Alto de La Huesera Neolithic dolmen, Laguardia, Spain
Dolmens are the oldest architectural structures preserved in Spain. Moreover, many dolmens are constructed using a system that is unique to Neolithic architecture, in which the covering megalithic slabs rest on walls of imbricated slabs. The dolmen of Alto de la Huesera is a good example of this type of structure. Reinforcement of this dolmen during excavation and subsequent conservation efforts required an analysis of the forces present within the structure. The contact loads between the slabs were determined, and the surfaces were reinforced with hydraulic lime mortar to prevent fracturing of the slabs by compression. Steel rods were introduced to avoid shearing between the slabs. The choice of a non-visible solution emphasizes the monumentality of the dolmen and avoids the negative visual impact of external structures.
