Hydration of tricalcium silicate. A study by high resolution scanning electron microscopy
The rate of hydration of C3S or formation of hydration products in water differs from that in lime solution only with respect to time. Otherwise, the sequence of hydration product formation is the same. We see that C-S-H and microcrystalline Ca(OH)2 form even before reaching saturation with respect to Ca(OH)2. As time passes and the lime saturation level changes, the sheet-like C-S-H transforms into bundles of parallel fibers intermixed with Ca(OH)2 crystallites. When adequate lime supersaturation is reached, some of these crystallites grow and form large blocks of Ca(OH)2 that contain C-S-H. Protective coatings of surface hydrates or hollow C-S-H fiber were not observed. Surface dissolution and hydrate formation appear to be non-uniform processes.
