X-ray microanalysis of hydrated cement
Microanalysis by means of an electron probe is used to investigate cement clinker and hydrated cement. Our aim is to ascertain the feasibility of the use of x-ray-spectral microanalysis by means of an electron probe to investigate the chemical inhomogeneity of the structure of hardened-cement stone. Qualitative micro x-ray-spectral analysis of hydrated cement can yield information on the distribution of the principal phases of cement stone: calcium hydroxide, the aluminoferrite component, and the silicate component (calcium silicates in the incompletely hydrated cement grains or calcium hydroxides in the products of hydration of the cement). Determination of the chemical composition of a particle sector of a test specimen from the results of quantitative x-ray spectral microanalysis can shed light on the composition of the hydration products of cement, their distribution in the cement stone, and the mechanism of hydration and hardening of cement.
