Evaporation suppression through in-situ formation of continuous polymer films
Continuous polymer films have been used successfully in small-scale tests to demonstrate the suppression of evaporation from water surfaces in a desert environment. Experimental results indicate that evaporation can be reduced by more than 80 %, and the films demonstrate good resistance to break-up by wind and wave action in shallow pans. Temperature, humidity, and air velocity were accurately measured, and the low humidity in the Indian Wells Valley made out-door experiments easy to carry out; the effect of various polymer films could be visually compared with the plain control specimen. Potential difficulties with this method of conservation lie in the continuity of the film which would have a deleterious effect on water-fowl and surface-feeding fish; limited transport of oxygen to the water would affect the vegetable and fish growth conditions, and use would be limited to conditions of drought.
