Using cost benefit analyses to select digital control systems
A technical feasibility study showed that digital control was a viable approach for a new water treatment plant. Designs evaluated included system composed essentially of first-level direct digital control (DDC) microprocessors, a configuration with a minicomputer added for plantwide supervision, and a plant with a third level comprising software for optimization. Savings in labor made the two-level system more economical than the DDC approach; reduction in energy costs and chemical usage justified the initial investment in the three-tier hierarchy.
