Computer simulation of pumping policies in a water-distribution network
Recent technological advances have made on-line optimal control of complex systems both feasible and economical. Industrialists, however, often feel more comfortable relying on heuristic algorithms derived from actual operator experience. Simulation provides a way of utilizing the capabilities of modern digital computers without losing the benefits of and the trust in traditional control methods. The operator can try various strategies as part of the simulation and see which one provides the best performance. An interactive computing facility with graphics provides immediate feedback and results which are easy to comprehend. A typical application is the minimization of pumping costs in a water supply network. The simulation shows that optimal control provides significant cost savings over MANUAL policies. This paper describes a methodology of simulation which has been applied to an actual water network in the United Kingdom.
