All the programs I have described are fully interactive but still depend heavily upon the professional judgement of Quantity Surveyors to operate - 1 stress this because I often get the reaction that the Quantity Surveyor's role is being diminished to a keyboard operator. The converse is in fact more likely to be the case and I consider that the Quantity Surveyors expersite will be extended by the new range of services he will be called upon to provide. C.A.D. will undoubtedly revolutionise building design techniques generally and will have a particular impact upon the Quantity Surveying profession when Computer Generated Quantities become the norm rather than the exception. However we are already utilising new technology to provide earlier accurate estimates, offering the most economic building configuration and interacting with C.A.D. techniques to provid continuing cost modelling advice during the design process. We are informing building clients of their commitments, providing early diagnosis of possible site problems and generally controlling costs rather than just monitoring them. The United Kingdom has developed a profession of Chartered Quantity Surveyors who are effectively Building Economics. I believe that our traditional approach to construction costing which provides a balance between commercial and professional expertise can be linked to microtechnological techniques to enable us to provide an invaluable service for our clients which will have a relevance anywhere in the world.
