Effect of phosphogypsum on properties of portland cement
The effect of phosphogypsum on the properties of ordinary portland cement was studied and compared to the corresponding effect of natural gypsum. The phosphogypsum significantly increased the 28-d expansion of the cement, somewhat increased its drying shrinkage, and reduced its 1-d strength. The 28-d strength, however, was somewhat improved and, considering local experience, it was concluded that this type of gypsum can be used successfully in the manufacture of ordinary portland cement. The phosphogypsum is a much more effective retarder than natural gypsum and should be added to the cement in smaller quantities.
