Hydration and pozzolanic activity of nonferrous slags
The present study deals with the characteristics of air-cooled and of quenched copper reverberatory furnace slags and their pozzolanic activity as related to the hydration products in portland cement-copper slag pastes and mortars. The experimental results show that the presence of the slag delays the transfer of Ca(2+) from the portland cement constituents to the solution at the early stage of hydration. Between 24 and 72 h, the measured Ca(2+) concentration in the solutions in contact with the binders and the percentage of Ca(OH)2 in the solid phase at the same age suggest that more C3S from the portland cement has reacted in the slag blends than in the portland cement paste. Compressive strength tests show that air-cooled slags may outperform quenched slags, depending on the fineness. The compressive strengths attained with mortars incorporating air-cooled or quenched copper reverberatory furnace slags may justify their use as portland cement replacement in concrete.
