Electrification will accelerate Fepasa's main-line freight
After a contract was signed in 1976 for electrification at 25 kV 60 Hz of the Santos-Uberaba route in Sao Paulo state it was found that incompatibility with Fepasa's existing 3 kV electrification was but one of several major difficulties. Unwillingness on the part of the financiers to release the necessary funds helped to stall the project, and only in 1980 did a revised scheme at 3 kV DC come to fruition. In the intervening period Fepasa had demonstrated convincingly its ability to pep up its freight business, and the first of several funding agreements was signed in 1980. A redrafted electrification contract followed, and work started recently on construction of an initial batch of 70 electric locomotives.
