The special requirements, configuration and size of the Itaipu project in Brazil/Paraguay made cable cranes particularly appropriate for the transport of concrete to the dam. It was felt that no other system could achieve the required transport in a simple and effective way on such an extensive site area. Using this type of crane system, access to the dam was not hindered at all, and construction work was not affected. Having decided on cable cranes for the transport of concrete at Itaipu, the designers of the project had to optimize the electrical and mechanical design so as to exploit the existing conditions to the full.
