Shinkansen track maintenance by closed-loop control
The task of keeping track up to standard is best viewed as a complete cybernetic system in which measurement, rectification and inspection cycles are optimised to suit observed and predicted rates of deterioration under traffic. Japanese National Railways uses computers to process data recorded on a 10 day cycle by the shinkansen track inspection train, using this to generate work schedules for contractors rectifying defects during the night. Subsequent inspection automatically defines the quality of work performed, which determines the payment made to the contractor.
