A deeper understanding of the behaviour of earth- and rockfill dams has been obtained over the last few years as a result of observation, research and instrumentation, mainly obtained through the use of inspection galleries. The author argues that the installation of such galleries will not only continue to extend our knowledge of dam behaviour, but also enhance dam safety.
