Remote surveillance at a water supply network
In this application sensors are used to relay information about the operation of pumping stations and of treatment plants, and about the state of reservoirs so that faults can be quickly rectified and maintenance procedures can be performed when necessary. The Departement de l'Ille-et-Vilaine is setting up such a system with eighteen sub-stations connected to a central station. The important data, relayed over a 32 MHz radio network, come from sensor banks in automatic systems with, in some cases, power supply from solar panels. Full environmental protection to these sub-stations is given. Interrogation of them can be when required, but is normally carried out at regular intervals. Signals can be relayed 'out of hours' to the appropriate personnel in urgent situations. Two or three years of operation will be required to optimise the surveillance system's performance.
