Apparent thermal conductivity of a local adobe building material
In order to determine the heat loss characteristic of a 'zero energy' passively heated and cooled house at the Institute for Desert Research, Sede Boqer, Israel, it was necessary to know the adobe thermal conductivity. However, it became obvious from a survey of the literature that reported values of adobe thermal conductivity varied widely. The conductivity of such solids is strongly related to the density and modulated by the presence of moisture and both are related to the composition. Not always are the density and moisture content quoted so that meaningful comparisons can be made. In view of this it was necessary to make measurements on the local material which was done by means of a steady state technique which is described by the author.
