Comparative economics and energy requirements of various desalting processes for the use of brackish groundwater for seawater barrier
The relative economics and energy requirements of electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, and freezing processes, both and in combination, for desalting of brackish well waters intended for recharge of high-quality aquifers are examined. The specific conditions used were chosen from the Santa Ana River groundwater basin, which is managed by the Orange County Water District in California. Waters from two sources are examined, one with 1463 ppm TDS and the other with 3159 ppm TDS. It is assumed that 5000 000 gpd water is available as feed to the desalting plant. Results are presented as capital costs, total annual costs, unit cost of water produced, and unit cost of salt removed.
