The influence of the steep increase in the energy prices on the costs of the different desalination processes (distillation - reverse osmosis - electrodialysis) is examined. This rapid rise in the energy prices involves the following changes concerning distillation. An increase in the performance ratio and the heat transfer surfaces; therefore the investments costs are more expensive without considering inflation phenomena. A decrease in the energy consumption. For membrane processes (electrodialysis, reverse osmosis) the rise of the energy prices has produced less important effects. Indeed the energy requirements necessary for these processes are smaller than those of the MSF distillation plants; it makes them very economical for brackish water desalination.
