On the collapse load of cylindrical shells
Bifurcation stresses and post-buckling behaviour of circular cylindrical shells under axial compression are analyzed. For shells with axisymmetrical, sinusoidal imperfections it is found that the advanced post-buckling behaviour can be such that higher loads than the bifurcation load can be supported before total collapse occusr. This holds good for relatively large imperfections (small bifurcation stresses), even in cases where the initial post-buckling behaviour indicates an unstable bifurcation. An extension of the asymptotically exact initial post-buckling analysis into the advanced post-buckling region is presented. The advanced post-buckling behaviour is analyzed by means of the Galerkin method using as coordinate functions a set of initial post-buckling functions corresponding to a given axial wavelength.
