Statistical analysis of damage accumulation in viscoelastic systems
Highway pavements are generally represented by a threelayer viscoelastic model. In this paper a two-part model is presented to account for damage accumulation in such structures. The first part of this model uses simulation techniques to relate the statistical chracteristics of the system response to the variability of the operating environment and of the material properties. The stress, strain and deflection outputs are used in the second part of the model to yield the statistical characteristics of three damage indicators: rutting, roughness and cracking. This second part of the model is based on a closed-form probabilistic solution. The material properties as well as the operating conditions, i.e., temperature, loading patterns and velocities, are given in terms of their statistical characteristics. The structural integrity and reliability with respect to each of the damage indicators are measured. A special feature of the second part of the model is that the responses are given for varying temperatures. An example of application is provided.
