Total system consideration for design of building's envelopes
The design process of a building envelope can be approached in two ways: by annual energy balancedesign criteria; and by continuous energy balance-performance considerations. The first method does not include all the factors that affect energy consumption in the parameter zone of a building. To minimize energy consumption, it is necessary to utilize all possible energy sources and to reject only the excess. The decision of usage versus rejection is done on a continuous basis. The second method considers all types of energy sources (solar, lights, heating and cooling energies) in the perimeter zone as well as building structure, mechanical systems and control systems to establish the most energy-efficient strategy for system control. This method demonstrates how controlling the solar load transmitted into the space, with modulation of artificial lights and modulation of the heating and cooling energy sources, lead to a control strategy that minimizes energy use continuously. Four different control alternatives are simulated, demonstrating the importances of total system consideration in designing energy efficient buildings.
