The design of structures for deflection control
In this paper the problem of designing line element structures to satisfy prescribed deflection constaints is discussed. An efficient method of computing deflection sensitivities, i.e. the effect of changes in member sizes on individual deflections, is presented. This is then incorporated into an iterative linear programming solution for the structural design. To decrease the computational effort, a method of approximacing the effect of member parameter changes on the deflection sensitivities is developed. Some comments are also offered on alternative non-automatic procedures.
