Lateral load tests on a foundation cylinder
A description is given of the in-situ lateral load testing of a 1.37 m diameter, 24 m long steel-lined reinforced concrete foundation cylinder constructed and tested as part of a comprehensive foundation investigation for a major harbour bridge. The cylinder was subjected to lateral loads up to 1MN, and behaviour was monitored by a large number of electric-resistance strain gauges fixed to the sides of the steel liners. Special technique were developed for placing the gauges and adequately protecting them aginst the severe environmental conditions. Manupulation of the straingauge results enabled deflection profiles and distributed lateral load (pressure) profiles to be computed for different levels of loading. From these, the vertical distribution of lateral subgrade coefficcient is estimated.
