The pumping installations of the yorkshire derwent scheme
The paper describes the pumping installations of a large potable water supply scheme. The scheme comprises river abstraction, water treatment and a sixty kilometre (thirty seven miles) long aqueduct. When commissioned in 1964 there were three pumping stations along the aqueduct. Extensions to the scheme have meant the installation of additional pumps in these stations and the construction of five further pumping stations along the pipelines. The hydraulics of the system and selection of pumping plant to enable automatic unmanned operation of the scheme are discussed, and details of operation and maintenance requirements and experience are given. The aqueduct pumping system employs a total of forty six pumps wiht a combined installed power approaching twenty megawatts. (Wassmann)
