In this paper, the advantages of a gas turbine plant combined with a desalination plant, a total energy plant, are described. This type of desalination plant can meet the rapidly increasing demand for both power generation and water production. The example chosen is that of a gas turbine, combined-desalination plant supplied to Zliten City of Libyan Arab Rublic which started combined operation successfully in April 1976; the detailed characteristics of this plant are introduced. The plant consists of three heavy duty type Hitachi-GE gas turbines with a 14600-kW power output at its base load rating and under the site ambient conditions, three unfired heat recovery steam generators, one oil fired auxiliary boiler and three 4500 cubic meters per day multi-stage flash evaporator type deslinators.
