Abrasion resistant alloys for excavation equipment
This paper deals with improvements in low alloy steels used for high-stress abrasion applications in Arctic environments. Standard earth-working tools, such as ditching teeth, have been shown to be totally inadequate when used in most permafrost conditions. Improvements in physical properties, such as impact resistance and strength were obtained by reduction of the level of impurities, reducing the grain size and modifiying the chemical composition to offset the loss of ductility which tends to accompany the increase in hardness. Crack opening displacement results seem to indicate that cast steels could perform equally as well as forged steels for these types of high-stress abrasion application. (Kursetz)
