On non-stationarity of earthquake input excitation
The method of evaluating the non-stationary characteristics of earthquake input excitation is studied for the actual recorded accelerograms. The non-stationarity of earthquake ground motion, as a problem in aseismic design for building structure, can be described in terms of non-stationary spectral density and amplitude level function, which indicate the time-variant spectral distribution in the frequency domain and the variation of intensiv level in the time domain, respectively. The non-stationary spectral density is defined as the finite time-averaged variance of output process through a narrow band filter. With respect to the resolution of spectral distribution, the average time for variance and the narrow band filter characteristics are examined. The amplitude level function, which is evaluated as the time increment of energy of wave shape within finite frequency domain, is discussed in comparison with the results by other evaluation methods in previous investigations. Numerical calculations of these non-stationary characteristics are carried out and are illustrated graphically for the accelerograms recorded at Kansai district. (DePo)
