Development of cement and concrete over the last twenty years
Over the last twenty years the applications of concrete have advanced significantly. For the nuclear industry, it has replaced steel pressure vessels for gas cooled nuclear stations and provides safe containment for other nuclear power plant designs. For the gas and oil industry in the North Sea, thirteen gravity based concrete drilling and production structures have been floated out and installed in water depths up to 120 metres, benefiting from its excellent durability in sea water. Other demanding applications, e.g. in liquid gas storage, are developing, where its resistance to low temperatures, blast and fire damage can be exploited. Also its conventional usages for bridges, buildings, roads, tunnelling etc., have extended along with design and production techniques for concrete as a material. The use of blended cements, admixtures, artificial aggregates and fibres is considerably greater and the speed of construction has been enhanced by precasting and ready mix supply, together with improvement in placing with pumps and larger pours on site. Problems have emerged but are being rectified by research and modifications to codes.
