Constructability of polymer-modified asphalt aggregate mixtures in Alaska

Polymer-modified asphalt usage in Alaska raises two important issues. The first concern is about the compatibility and storage stability when polymers are used with Alaskan crude oils. Secondly, the ability of the contractor to place polymer-modified mixes continues to trouble construction personnel. This study addresses both these issues. Tests indicate that polymer-modification improved the performance of all base asphalts. However, some binders smoke excessively when the temperature was elevated to the recommended mixing temperature. This issue warrants further investigation.
