Life-cycle cost design of deteriorating bridges using genetic algorithm
The purpose of life-cycle cost bridge optimization is to implement an optimal inspection/repair strategy for the minimum expected total life-cycle cost that includes initial, preventive maintenance, inspection, repair and failure cost while the bridge maintains the target reliability. This paper presents an optimization methodology for the life-cycle cost design of reinforced concrete T-girders that deteriorate over time. An attempt is made here to extend and improve the previous work by Frangopol et al. (1997) so as to determine the time, quality and number of inspections and repairs by applying Genetic Algorithm. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method.
