Fire testing of lift-landing doorset, both domestic and international, and the problems associated with modernization
The fire testing of a lift-landing doorset is principally designed to provide assurance that, in the event of a fire on one compartmentalized floor, the fire will not spread to other floors by way of the lift shaft. As with Australian Standards (AS), most overseas testing methods are based on International Organization for Standardization (ISO) procedures. Even those national standards which have been developed in isolation from ISO use a similar fire exposure. This allows registered testing authorities to assess overseas reports on doorsets for compliance to AS 1530.4. Today, one of the most significant problems facing the lift industry, however, is the question of modernization. This might be the result of a need for newer features, smoother operation, changes in building usage or simply aesthetics. It might involve the changing of a simple lock or the replacement of the entire hanger and door assembly. The principles adopted for these various assessments will be discussed.
