Reducing the drying shrinkage of cement paste by admixture surface treatments
Silane treatment of silica fume and/or carbon fiber is highly effective for decreasing the drying shrinkage of cement paste. The increase of the hydrophilic character of fibers and particles after the treatment and the formation of chemical bonds between fibers/particles and cement are believed to be the main reasons for the observed decrease of the drying shrinkage. By adding silane-treated carbon fibers and replacing as-received silica fume by silane-treated silica fume, the shrinkage at 28 days is decreased by 32%.
