Characterization of the flammability of polymers by high energy flux (HEF) calorimeter
A High Energy Flux (HEF) Calorimeter has been designed to evaluate the flammability of polymers under conditions typical of combat field scenarios and large-scale fires. For the evaluations, polymers are exposed to external heat flux values in the range of 0 to 150 kW/m2 in co-flowing air with oxygen concentration in the range of 0 to 100%. The flammability evaluations consist of testing for resistance to ignition, combustion, fire propagation, and release of heat and products. This paper describes the HEF Calorimeter and test procedures with examples of data for ignition and mass loss rate.
