Novel low cost fire resistant composite resin for VARTM
Triton Systems has demonstrated, on a Naval Surface Warfare Center (Carderock, MD) supported Phase I SBIR Program, a simple, low cost modification of a commercial off the shelf (COTS) phenolic resin that results in excellent fire resistance with low smoke evolution and improved mechanical properties over the unmodified phenolic. The 20% modified resin exhibits increased flexural strength relative to the unmodified phenolic resin. The modified phenolic can be processed using vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) and cured at low temperature. The modified phenolic resin has excellent fire/smoke/toxicity characteristics and yet is available at a modest price. However, conventional phenolic resins are known to evolve water during crosslinking which produce voids and as a consequence have poor mechanical properties. The Triton Systems modified phenolic is cured without voids due to the modification, which reduces the formation of volatiles and provides the observed improvement in mechanical properties.
