Influence of coatings on the service life of concrete sandwich-facades
This study focuses on resolving the influence of different coating types on service life of the sandwich-element concrete facades. The main task is not to compare the products of the manufacturers, but to find a coating type or combination that best prevents the sandwich-elements from deterioration. The examined coatings consist of organic, cement-based and impregnation. All tests were made to sawn samples of old exposed-aggregate or brushed surface sandwich-elements. After the thermal cycling test, the tensile strengths of almost all coated specimens were smaller than the tensile strengths of the reference specimens. Only cement-based coatings with a brushed surface slowed damage in the concrete substrate. On examining the results of the thermal cycling test, it must be noted that the test was made in laboratory conditions, which do not completely correspond to conditions in the real facade. Furthermore, the dispersion of the tensile strengths was rather wide. Based on these facts the results of this test must be examined only as giving a direction. The mean values of the water vapour diffusion resistances of the used impregnations and cement-based coatings were noticeably smaller than ones of organic coatings. However, the internal dispersion of the diffusion resistances of the group of the organic coatings was pretty wide. The water absorption to concrete sandwich-facades can be noticeably reduced by organic coating. The cement-based coatings can not reduce water absorption as well as the organic ones, but they can dry faster. On the basis of the field measure the moisture of the sandwich-facades can be reduced especially by organic coating.
