Evaluation techniques of geotextiles
Geotextiles is a unique product in the sense while it is a textile product, it is intended to serve the needs of a civil engineer. From the evaluation point of view it is necessary to know the following details for a given geotextile product: End use or intended application, functions demanded, polymer, fibre used, type of structure an in case of composites, interaction between layers. A brief listing of parameters involved for evaluating a geotextile under specific classes is given: Thickness, mass/unit area, flexibility, tensile strength, compressibility, tear strength, bursting strength, puncture resistance, and seam strength. The soil-geotextile interaction may be mechanical or physical as follows: Shear between soil and geotextiles, porosity, apparent opening size, permittivity and transmittivity, abrasion, creep, weatherability, temperature resistance, long term flow and resistance to clogging. Features of some specific tests for geotextiles are as follows: Wide width tensile test, tension creep behaviour, coefficient of friction between soil and geotextile, water permeability and clogging resistance by long term flow.
